Statistical Consultancy
Please note: I am not currently accepting any new contracts or consultancy work in the area of statistics.
I am a qualified and experienced research statistician available for consultancy and contract work for commercial and non-commercial clients.
With 20 years experience working with computers and databases and my retraining a few years ago to Masters level as a medical statistician, I can offer support ranging from brief consultancy and advice through to a complete design, ethics submission, data management, analysis and authoring solutions for your project.
Futher details on my experience, skills and terms are available in the expanding sections below.
Qualifications
MSc in Medical Statistics from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, University of London
Fellow (FRSS) and professionally registered member (GradStat) of the Royal Statistical Society.
Experience Previous Employment
Three years at Thames Valley University, London working as a Lecturer (Psychological Research Methods) in the Psychology Subject Group and as a Lecturer (Medical Statistics) and Consulting Statistician in the Faculty of Health and Human Sciences.
A year on contract at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine as a Research Fellow (Medical Statistician) in the department of Epidemiology and Population Health.
In the above roles I have been involved in preparing funding bids and COREC ethics applications, responsible for the data management and analysis of large (50,000+ cases) research databases, have provided statistical consultancy to colleagues and have been a collaborator on a number of large, externally funded research projects. In addition, I have run or contributed to statistical and research methods training provided to staff, undergraduate and postgraduate students.
Working with Students
I am an experienced teacher of statistics at undergraduate and postgraduate level and have supported PhD students working in diverse areas such as psychology and midwifery through the process of research design, analysis and presentation. I am very comfortable working with clients who are not statisticians but who want or need to be more involved in the analysis. This may range from simple explanation through to one-to-one tuition to make sure you fully understand the analyses yourself.
Whatever level of involvment you wish to work at I can work at a complementary level to give you the confidence that your results are robustly defensible as well as the necessary depth of understanding to be able to defend them.
Working with Researchers
My experience as a consulting statistician has seen me work with a variety of clients ranging from those who are qualified in statistics through to those who may have great depth of knowledge in their own fields but have little or no interest in the mechanics of analysis.
I pride myself on my ability to communicate complex statistical concepts and ideas with clarity to the non-statistician and can provide a service tailored to your individual needs, ranging from preliminary advice on design and power suitable for ethics submissions and funding applications, through setting up data management systems to a complete analysis service including assistance with writing up methodology, results and discussion sections for publication, and dealing with occasionally awkward reviewers.
Scope of Services Research Design
I have provided consultative support on the design of over 30 projects including psychometric and epidemiological studies and clinical trials. I have an in-depth knowledge in these areas having previously lectured on research design as well as statistics and research methods in nursing, business and the social sciences.
Research Ethics
I am trained in and maintain an up-to-date knowledge of NHS research governance procedures having previously sat as statistical reviewer on university research ethics committees, working to both NHS COREC and BPS ethical standards.
As a consulting statistician I have signed off and provided correspondance and reports in support of a number of NHS research ethics applications where I have conducted power analyses and provided design advice.
Data Management
With over 20 years experience working with computers and databases I am very familiar with the problems of data management that can beset large projects.
I have worked on a wide range of database and spreadsheet programs as well as dedicated statistical packages including Stata, SPSS and SAS. I program in SQL and have constructed advanced database query systems to extract data in a manageable form and to move data from one platform to another.
I have also developed a number of user-friendly database interfaces to facilitate data entry by semi-skilled staff using modern methods of error detection and validation.
Data Analysis
My statistical training covers the ground from estimator derivation (likelihood theory and method of moments) through to the application of a variety of advanced modelling techniques (e.g. fractional polynomial regression, multi-level modelling).
I am a fully competent user and programmer in Stata and SPSS and have provided training in the use of both. I am also familiar with SAS, MlWin, First Bayes, WinBUGS and G-Power.
I use a wide range of statistical techniques from basic descriptive and inferential statistics through various forms of regression (linear, logistic, fractional polynomial, Poisson, exponential, proportional hazards), bootstrapping, Bayesian methods (Gibbs sampling), analysis of variance (ANCOVA, MANOVA etc.), survival analysis, and multi-level modelling for hierarchically structured data using robust standard errors, generalised estimating equations or full random effects multi-level modelling.
I also have experience with niche techniques such as statistical process control (SPC charts), screening metrics, structural equation modelling and modelling of health economic data.
Reporting and Dissemination
I have contributed to methods, results and discussion sections of both published research and unpublished reports, with my input varying from advice and editing through to full authorship.
I have provided peer-review for journals both in my own name and in support of others where they required expert opinion on the methodological and statistical aspects of a manuscript.
I have reviewed manuscripts of forthcoming stastical texts for a major publisher on an ad hoc basis.
Rates
My rates vary depending on the amount and nature of the work being offered and the type of client (commercial or non-commercial).
