SPSS Materials
With each new version of SPSS, old materials and books tend to go out of date and new ones are produced. These are the SPSS resources I have recommended to students in the past. Some of these deal with slightly older versions of SPSS but generally they are still useful (or I would have deleted them!).
Mailing Lists
There is a mailing list called the SPSSX-LIST where users post questions about SPSS that are then answered by other users. This is quite a lively discussion list and you can learn a lot about SPSS but I would recommend you register for the daily digest version of the list as there are often a lot of messages each day.
The Product and Company
SPSS is produced by SPSS Incorporated and this is probably the best place to look for technical support and information on the latest version of SPSS and it's Add-on modules.
Online Tutorials and Guides
Birmingham University provides The How To Guides which are a very well presented set of on-line guides to using SPSS. These give a gentle introduction to the program with much use of screenshots and 'click-by-click' instructions that are suitable for complete beginners and experienced used alike. Guides are provided for versions 9 and 10 of SPSS, although the version 10 guide should work just as well for SPSS versions 11 and 12. Because of the way the information is indexed, this is an excellent resource to use if you know the name of the test you want but can't quite remember what to click.
UCLA has a series of pages on SPSS which include a wide range of teaching materials, including on-line video lectures in their SPSS Starter Kit and detailed handouts and exercises concerned with data management and data manipulation in their more advanced Learning Modules.
John Samuel at the University of Indiana has also made his SPSS Text Book available for free online use. This provides a good general introduction to the program with lots of 'screen shots', and takes you through the statistics typically covered by psychology students during their first year research methods classes.
