Statistics Resources

This page contains links to various online resources that either my students or I have found useful in the past. The main focus is statistics in medical research however statisticians working in other academic research contexts may well find some of these materials of interest.

General and Introductory Resources

St George's Hospital Medical School provides an on-line guide to the statistical content required in grant applications and this is effectively a good practice guide for planning the analysis of different types of medical research.

The British Medical Journal provides a free online text book on statistics.

The HyperStat on-line text book on statistics covers basic statistical principles from deBive statistics through to simple analysis of variance, with book reviews and many links to other sites of interest.

The RDDirect website also has a section on statistics which links to a number of resources including various calculators and tools to assist with statistical analysis, power analysis and randomisation.

The American Statistical Association biographies of statisticians.

Software

Some SPSS Materials including details on mailing lists, the product and company, online guides and tutorials and reviews of a couple of printed books.

My Stata Resources.  Downloadable 'ado' files implementing new procedures in Stata.

Organisations

The Royal Statistical Society is the main statistical organisation in the UK, with power to grant royal charters to qualified members.

Mailing Lists

AllStat is the mailing list of the Royal Statistical Society.  A useful list from which to seek comment on technical issues and for notification of conferences and jobs.

SPSSX-LIST is the mailing list of the SPSS user group.  Mainly questions and answers about SPSS (no surprise there, then!).

MedStats is an independent mailing list specifically for medical statisticians.  Permits exchanges of views within the forum rather than just posting of questions and then respond to poster.

http://www.stattransfer.com/lists.html: a web based list of statistical mailing lists.

... and online accessibility

Other Online Resources

The British Medical Journal: Statistics Notes provide a great introduction to specific statistical tests and methods.  Good for beginners, improvers, and for statisticians to give to non-statisticians who need to be educated!

http://www.missingdata.org.uk/ provides some useful information on methods of missing data analysis.

Specialist Publishers

http://www.statsnetbase.com/, a site for Chapman and Hall/CRC, publishers of statistics texts.

London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine: Medical Statistics Unit

University College London Hospitals: Medical Statistics Unit
