Resources for Researchers
This is a 'dumping ground' for useful links for researchers that I have come across over the last few years including resources related to my assistance with funding and ethics applications and general resources on research methods.
Research Funding
Directories of Funding Providers
The RDInfo website is funded by the department of health and gathers together information on health related funding bodies and opportunities. A nice site with what appears to be pretty comprehensive coverage of health related funding providers, complete with an e-mail service where you can register to receive information on new funding opportunities as they arise.
The Higher Education and Research Opportunities (HERO) website has lots of information of different sources of funding and links to charitable, research council and learned societies that fund research.
Writing Grant Applications
St George's Hospital Medical School provides an on-line guide to the statistical content required in grant applications for medical research funding.
Research Ethics
Legislation and Standards
The Department of Health has information and links on research governance, including the Hunt report 'Research governance framework for England' and various information pages and examples covering topics such as protecting participant's rights, responsibilities of principle investigators etc.
The 2004 legislation on Medicines for Human Use (clinical trials).
The World Medical Association declaration of Helsinki covers ethical principles for medical research involving human subjects.
The International Conference on Harmonisation of Technical Requirements for Registration of Pharmaceuticals for Human Use (ICH) including topics ICH E9 on statistical principles for clinical trials and ICH E10 on choice of control group and related issues in clinical trials.
Research Design and Analysis
Research Methods
The RDDirect website is funded by the Department of Health and contains links to carefully selected web-based resources. This includes a section on research methods that has links to selected resources on questionnaire and survey design, psychometric tests, experimental design and qualitative and quantitative research methods.
Please refer to my page on statistics for statistics related resources.
Getting Published
Referencing
The website of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors documents the Vancouver guidelines for manuscripts submitted to medical journals.
General Guidance
The RDDirect website is funded by the Department of Health and contains links to carefully selected web-based resources such as research databases, guides to writing and publishing research, books on research methods and statistics, and lists of research networks and centers.
The CONSORT statement on standards for reporting results of clinical trials has been adopted by many medical journals as part of their requirements for authors (e.g. The Lancet). These is also an extension of the consort statement for cluster randomised trials.
