I've introduced advertising as I fund the hosting of this site privately. This is partly because I am not settled at a particular academic institution and partly because the offers of hosting I have received have been on servers which don't support the technologies I use.  Based on statistical projections from the first few weeks of running advertisments, and my site traffic expectations based on the last couple of years, the funds raised by advertising should just about cover my hosting costs for the year.  Any excess funds will be invested in expanding my available bandwidth or covering other associated costs.

I have worked as a university lecturer in psychology and certainly don't want to be advertising services that I would prefer my own students don't use.  The decision to include advertising was only made once I had assured myself that I could retain some control over the services advertised. Advertising on this site is provided via Google's web based advertising service (see below) and this allows me to block broad product areas (e.g. 'adult' services) as well as individual advertisers.  I have already blocked over 30 services which I disapprove of (e.g. essay writing services) and if you see any advertisement on this site that you think is inappropriate then please e-mail me with the URL of the company placing the advertisement and I will set up a further block.

If you specifically want to advertise a commercial product on my site (and it's a product or service that I consider appropriate for university students) then please contact me by e-mail to discuss rates.  I can offer banner advertisements as well as a feature box on the home page or in the sidebars. I will also happily advertise what I consider to be non-commercial products pro-bono as long as they are in keeping with the site's content and likely to be of interest to my visitors.  Occasionally I may also run feature advertisements to tie in with current events such as book launches and programmed media such as radio or television programmes of interest.
