The development of social attachments in infancy

Undertook ethological observations of mothers and babies which led to refutation of the ‘special bond’ approach of monotrophy. They discovered that the bond formed as a result of the quality of interaction between the mother and the child, not simply because it is the biological mother looking after the baby. They found that babies are sociable and respond best to those who interact with them and are most sensitive to them. They also suggested that babies may form multiple attachments.
