The quality of the toddler's relationship to mother and father: related to conflict behaviour and readiness to establish new relationships

Strange situation research showed that toddlers showed different attachment behaviours to mother, father and a friendly stranger (a clown). They found that different attachment characteristics were displayed towards the different individuals from which they concluded that infants have developed multiple attachment by this age. They also noted that toddlers who had secure attachment relationships with both parents were the most socially responsive to the clown, followed by those who had one secure parental attachment. They also noted that some infants did not fit the three classification model at all well.
