The colors of love: An exploration of the ways of loving

Lee, J. (1973). The colors of love: An exploration of the ways of loving. Don Mills, Ontario, Canada: New Press.

Proposed a system for classifying personal style of loving. This was based on three main styles, Eros, Ludus and Storge, and three minor styles which were combinations of two of the above, Agape, Pragma and Mania.

The Primary Styles

  • Eros is characterised by an intense physical and emotional attraction and commitment.
  • Ludus refers to love that is played out according to a set of rules, and should be fun with no commitment.
  • Storge is characterised by a deep affection, devotion and commitment.

The Secondary Styles

  • Mania is an obsessive and intensive love.
  • With Pragma, love is viewed as a practical matter of finding a compatible partner and settling down.
  • Agape is an intense for friendly love, often self-sacrificing.

This model was compared to attachment style by Shaver & Hazan (1988), Levy & Davis (1988) and Feeney & Noller (1990).
